Intensive CPE course



 
 

This course is intended to boost the general linguistic competence of the Advanced-level student across the four skills-reading, writing, listening, speaking. The classes and the tutorials are tailored to respond to the format of the CPE Cambridge exam. Hence, focus is given on developing strategies for the five parts of the exam.

 

The method of teaching is the communicative approach. The teacher is never the sage on the stage. We always try to develop self-confidence, critical thinking, and cultural awareness in our students. Thus, the aim of the course is not just to equip learners with linguistic weaponry for the Cambridge test, but also to enculturate and uplift learners. An independent educator guarantees that standards are never compromised.

PART I:

READING


1h and 30 min.

4 parts:

multiple choice lexical cloze, multiple choice questions , gapped text , multiple choice questions on one text

I can read with ease virtually all forms of the written language, including abstract, structurally or linguistically complex texts such as manuals, specialized articles and literary works.

I can understand written English at word, phrase, gist, main points, detail, text structure. I can extract specific information and deduce meaning. I can recognize opinion and attitude.

PART II:

WRITING

2 hours

Compulsory Part I:

Part II: One task selected from a choice of four

I can write clear, smoothly-flowing text in an appropriate style. I can write complex letters, reports or articles which present a case with an effective logical structure which helps the recipient to notice and remember significant points. I can write summaries and reviews of professional or literary works.

I am aware of and can implement the standards of textuality when I write a letter, a report, a review, instructions, announcements.

PART III: USE OF ENGLISH

1hour and 30 min.

5 parts: open cloze, word formation, gapped sentences , sentence transformations, 2 texts with questions and a summary writing task


I can actively control the grammar and vocabulary of the language and demonstrate competence in a variety of tasks: multiple choice cloze, open cloze, word transformation, error correction, word formation, register change gap-fill.

I can demonstrate knowledge and control of the language system at text and sentence level.

PART IV:

LISTENING:


40min.

multiple choice, sentence completion, matching questions


I have no difficulty in understanding any kind of spoken language, whether live or broadcast, even when delivered at fast native speed, provided. I have some time to get familiar with the accent.

I can understand gist, main points, detail or specific information, or the deduction of meaning.

PART V:

SPEAKING

3 parts:

interview section, collaborative task, individual long terns with follow-up discussion

I can take part effortlessly in any conversation or discussion and have a good familiarity with idiomatic expressions and colloquialisms. I can express myself fluently and convey finer shades of meaning precisely. If I do have a problem I can backtrack and restructure around the difficulty so smoothly that other people are hardly aware of it.

I can present a clear, smoothly-flowing description or argument in a style appropriate to the context and with an effective logical structure which helps the recipient to notice and remember significant points.

I can produce spoken English using a range of functions in a variety of tasks.
